“No text could be extracted” means that ChatGPT did not obtain usable text from the file in that attempt. It does not tell you why.
A scanned or image-only PDF is one possible cause, but it is not the only one. A PDF can also display readable words while storing little usable text underneath. Conversely, if text copies normally, the problem may involve the file structure, a temporary processing failure, or a document-access limitation in the ChatGPT context you are using.
Check the PDF before you retry
Use the PDF Text Layer Checker to compare a visible sampled page with text extracted from that same page in your browser.
The check runs locally. Before You Retry does not receive your PDF, and you do not need an account. The tool does not send the document to ChatGPT or another AI service.
You make the final judgment. The checker samples up to three pages; it does not inspect or certify the entire document.
Choose the path that matches your PDF
A. You cannot select or copy meaningful text
The page may be a scan or another image-based PDF. What looks like text to you may only be pixels, leaving no searchable text layer for a text-extraction process to use.
OCR may be the appropriate next step. Keep the original file, run OCR on a copy, and inspect the result before trusting it. OCR can introduce missing characters, substituted words, broken columns, and incorrect reading order.
B. You can select text, but it copies as blank, garbled, or out of order
The PDF may have a text layer that is missing, incomplete, incorrectly encoded, or badly ordered.
Compare more than one representative page. Include a normal paragraph page and, if relevant, a page containing columns, footnotes, tables, or forms. If the extracted side does not agree with what you see, consider producing a fresh PDF from the trusted source or applying OCR to a copy.
Do not treat a successful result on one sampled page as proof that every page is usable.
C. Text copies cleanly, but ChatGPT still shows the error
Do not assume the PDF is a scan.
Other plausible explanations include a corrupted or malformed file, an unsupported or unusual PDF structure, a temporary platform or file-processing failure, or a broader limitation on document access in the ChatGPT feature or context being used.
Preserve the original. Then try the smallest relevant step:
- Confirm that the complete PDF opens and renders in a trusted PDF viewer.
- Export or print a fresh PDF from the trusted source, if you control it.
- Create a smaller copy containing only the pages needed for the task.
- Retry later if normally selectable PDFs are failing at the same time.
- Use broader diagnosis if the correct next step is still unclear.
What this error can and cannot tell you
The error reports an unsuccessful extraction attempt. It does not establish which underlying condition caused it.
Plausible causes include:
- Scanned or image-only PDF: the visible words are part of an image.
- Missing or unusable text layer: text appears visible but cannot be extracted reliably.
- Corrupted or malformed PDF: the file opens inconsistently or contains damaged structures.
- Unsupported or unusual file structure: the PDF uses features that a particular processor may not handle as expected.
- Platform or file-processing failure: the attempt may fail even when the document itself has usable text.
- Broader document-access limitation: PDF handling can differ across products, plans, features, and document contexts.
Those are diagnostic categories, not confirmed explanations for an individual file. The message alone cannot distinguish among them.
If the PDF is scanned
OCR creates machine-readable text from page images. It may make a scanned document searchable or easier for other tools to process, but it does not guarantee accurate extraction.
Review names, numbers, punctuation, columns, page headers, footnotes, and tables against the visible original. If the document matters, keep the source and treat OCR output as a derived working copy.
The scanned-PDF guide explains how to evaluate that workflow. It is not a ranked product list and contains no affiliate selection.
If the PDF’s text looks normal
A clean copy-and-paste result makes an image-only scan less likely, but it does not prove the file will work in every platform.
Try a freshly exported copy or a smaller relevant page range before applying OCR to an otherwise healthy text PDF. OCR can discard useful structure or introduce new errors, so it should not be the automatic response to every extraction message.
If the upload later succeeds but ChatGPT omits sections, columns, footnotes, or pages, use Why ChatGPT misses information in PDFs instead. That is a different problem from receiving no extracted text.
When you need broader diagnosis
If the checker result and the visible PDF do not make the next step clear, use the guided diagnostic.
The diagnostic does not receive the PDF, extracted text, or checker state. It starts a separate question flow using only the answers you choose to provide.
Limits of this check
The PDF Text Layer Checker:
- processes the selected PDF locally in your browser;
- requires no account and does not upload the PDF to Before You Retry;
- compares only the sampled pages you review;
- does not certify that the whole document is complete or correct;
- does not test ChatGPT’s internal file-processing system;
- does not guarantee that ChatGPT or another tool will accept the PDF;
- does not pass document or checker results into the diagnostic; and
- records no document-derived analytics.
Use it to choose a more informed next step—not as proof that a document or AI result is reliable.
